Motivated Mondays

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined."- Henry David Thoreau

Last night, a close friend of mine asked if I thought she could do the Tough Mudder (TM). This friend has suffered painful back issues for a long time that have negatively impacted her ability to workout. Recently though, she's really been working on finding out what she CAN do rather than be limited by what she might not be able too.

When she asked abort the TM, I immediately said "of course!" The one we are talking about doing is 6 months away, she already does some exercising and was ready to add a bit more. I LOVED what she said about doing the TM "I feel like I've been the girl having to say I can't for so long. I don't want to say I can't anymore". I love this! I know with the right training, this is a goal she can undoubtedly achieve but I loved even more hearing that positive attitude from her.

When you want to do something new or something challenging, it can be so hard just to start. There's so many obstacles, things that could stop you and yes, even people that might try to stop you. It can be downright scary to verbalize a big goal because then if you don't do it, you feel like a failure or that people are judging. But goals are ever evolving and need to be adjusted as we go. Dreams are the bigger picture; we use goals to realize our dreams. The TM is a goal for my friend but the dream is to be the girl who says I CAN. She already took the first step by saying I'm going to try! I truly believe she can do the TM but if that doesn't work for her back, just that first step of saying I can, I want to, instead of I can't is huge. We can change the goal as long as we're always moving towards the dream, the big picture.

When you have a big dream, set smaller goals along the way that move you closer to realizing that dream. Adjust as needed because the path to your biggest dreams is not linear! You have to grow and adapt and adjust along the way, but just be sure you're always moving towards your dream, towards the life you want to live.

What are your big goals? What do you want to achieve with your health and fitness? How are you going to get there?
