Workout Wednesdays

I wrote this post awhile back and never quite found the right time for it. So although I am back to weights after several months of bodyweight only workouts, I wanted to post this now anyway and get everyone's thoughts on bodyweight workouts! Share your workouts in the comments below!

After the Tough Mudder, I decided I wanted to change my workout style to include more compound, functional strength training.  In that vein, I've switched to mostly body weight exercises including squats, push-ups, pull-ups, lunges and core work.  So far, it feels pretty good! It's completely different from lifting heavy stuff and putting it back down again! I definitely notice that I have to pull from more muscle groups to accomplish these exercises and these movements are better at mimicking real life strength needs.

Changing your workouts regularly is important so your body doesn't get overly adapted to what you're doing and thus not be challenged by the workout. Challenging your muscles is one of the most important things you can do to increase strength.

If you haven't tried body weight workouts yet, I highly recommend you give it a try.  You can find lots of different ones on pinterest, Facebook and even Twitter.  You can also easily make up your own mix and the best part is you can almost always do these workouts at home - so no excuses!

Have you tried body weight workouts? If so, what are you favorite exercises or circuits? How were the results?
