PUSH YOURSELF....or not?

The other day a good friend of mine (who is runs half marathons, training towards a full) had a Facebook status about how when someone had asked her WHY you would want to push yourself and challenge yourself to something really hard just to see if your body can do it?  Why do something that you know will be incredibly hard, that you might not even be able to do - why try?  And her response was basically if you don't know, I can't explain it to you.

I think that's so true.  If you don't have that drive, that need for adrenaline rushes and the feeling of accomplishment when you do something you thought you couldn't (or others thought you couldn't) or that joy when you complete a challenge that terrified you, then I can't explain to why those feelings are amazing.  Why it's the best feeling in the world to finish something you didn't know you could.  On the flip side, that same person won't ever be able to explain to me why they don't want those feelings and why they don't want to push themselves to the limit.  I like to be outside my comfort zone.  As scared as I may be before I tackle something new, I always feel amazing when I get outside what I know and what I already knew I could do and prove I can go even further.

Do you need to know just how far you can go physically? How do you set your goals for fitness - do you push to the max, do you aim for fun, something else completely?
